Well, this will be the last blog I write for English 101. This semester has surprisingly went fast. I have enjoyed getting to know you through blogging and who knows maybe we will be in the same class next semester. We are all so different but yet I have found something in common with most everyone in the class.
In a way I am kind of excited for this class to be over with so I can have a few weeks off to enjoy the holiday season. This past Friday night my husband and I and family went to the Coleman Theatre in Miami, Oklahoma. If you have never been there you have to go. The building is amazing and is beautifully decorated for the holidays. The Nutcracker ballet was fantastic and was just a great holiday experience all around. We are talking about having a fun day in Branson at the outlet mall and then going to see the lights in Silver Dollar City, I hear they are beautiful as well.
Good luck to all of you in the future in whatever you do and Happy Holidays to you and your family.

MTV's Teen Moms' show interrupted lives
According to TODAY the show "Teen Moms" is a way to show girls how hard it is to be a teen parent and has the potential to open up important dialogue.
Even though I am not a teen I have caught myself watching this show more than once. These girls and guys in the show have had their lives turned upside down because of decisions they have made. This show is a great way to let other teens experience what it is like to raise a baby / toddler and deal with circumstances that they would encounter on a daily basis.
This subject really hits home to me since I had my daughter when I was 18. We watch this show together and I remind her age of 21 I already had two children she says "I bet it sucked to be you". She laughs and I know that it's hard for her to imagine her life with children at the stage of life she is at now. Being a teen parent is tough, financially and emotionally. One of the girls on the show was popular with good grades and plans to go to college. Her path changed when she got pregnant by her boyfriend. Instead of going to college, her priority is taking care of the baby. According to Dr. Berman, a psychotherapist, teen relationships usually do not last. That was the case in mine and then you have to share your child for holidays, have child support issues and constant contact and sometimes not with the other parent of that child. Not fun!
Being a teen mom is full of challenges and adoption is always an option if you are not ready or able to care for the baby. Having a supportive family and a network of people who you can depend on is key. I gave up alot but I gained more. After high school I was not able to go to college but my kids are grown and here I am. Anything can be accomplished with determination and the will to succeed.

Cartoon Characters as Facebook Profile Pictures
According to ABC News facebook users are changing their profile pictures to images of their favorite childhood cartoon characters. This is for a campaign against violence on children.
Being a current Facebook user this was an interesting story to me and I thought it was a great way to raise awareness about violence on children.
Last week I had noticed alot of pictures of my "friends" on Facebook being changed to cartoon characters from their childhood and thought was a great way to raise awareness on violence on children. But, what can a cartoon character do? Should we not be doing more? Personally I am all for raising awareness but until we personally decide to do something proactive are things really going to change? A lady and a friend of mine posted...."I am not going to change my picture on Facebook but my husband and I are sponsoring a boy from Turnaround Ranch next year". What a great way to show your support by doing something. Don't get me wrong all of us are not in the position to do something for whatever reason but we can still support those who are and can.
Changing your profile picture on Facebook is a fun way to show support and I have have done it just for what it symbolizes. Not everyone has led an abuse free life and those children need to be remembered and rescued from this type of life. It is nice to go down memory lane and remember times when you didn't have a care in the world so I challenge you: Change your profile picture to your favorite cartoon from when you were a kid. The goal of the game is not to see a human picture on Facebook, but an invasion of childhoods memories until Monday. PLAY AND PASS ALONG! You can find me on Facebook or search for Susan Lucas Bryant.

Police: Pennsylvania Family Hid Children for Years
According to Fox news the parent of five children - ranging in age from 2 to 13 managed to conceal them for so many years. This family lived in a squalid row house with no heat, electricity or running water. They had no birth certificates, no schooling, no immunizations or evidence of medical care - nothing whatsoever to prove their existence.
This situation is so sad and has permanently damaged all of those precious children for the rest of their lives. What frustrates me with this story is how NOONE could have known. So many people have lost their caring attitude toward another person. How could you not notice that the lights have not been on in the home next to you?
When the mother was arrested she told police that she had run away from home when she was 16 from a very chaotic household and did not want to be found. The decisions that the mom made from what had happened in the past impacted the future with her own children. The mom realizes now she should have done it differently. The article says that they were tipped off in 2003 and again in 2007 by someone but since the dad was not cooperative nothing was done. Are you kidding me? Do you really think that someone would be cooperative if they thought they might get in trouble for what they were doing? Why did they authorities not follow up, get a court order and save those children from living in the unsanitary conditions any longer? There definitely need to be some questions answered on that call.
According to the article years of isolation have taken their toll on the siblings. Now living in foster homes, "some of the children suffer health and vision and none of the children are at their expected eduction levels, and there are possible mental health issues. All I can say is how sad for everyone involved and I hope these precious children can be rehabilitated and become successful members of society.

10 Really Bizarre Guinness World Records
According to ABC news, November 18 was "Happy Guinness World Record Day!" In honor of this special day, which makes otherwise rational people do ridiculous things to get their name in the (kinda) history books, we've rounded up some of the weirdest records out there.
Some of these records are just crazy and some are just funny funny. It really mad me LOL (laugh out loud) while I was reading about some of these crazy things people were going to get into the Guinness Book of world records. I can't wait to tell you about some of them.
A former Texas medical student has the record for the worlds longest leg hair, it was 5 inches long; he even conditioned it so that it stayed nice. That is just sick, who knew that the hair on a mans leg could grow that long and just one piece? The record for the longest fingernails had not cut them since 1979. Are you kidding me? The nails had grown to a combined 28 feet but they broke off in a car crash and at that time she realized she needed to move on. Now the record belongs to a man whose nails are 29 feet. Wearing acrylic 2 inch nails is tough enough but we are talking feet not inches. Crazy!Or what about the guy who pulled 907 pounds using his eye sockets? What in the world, what a risk that would be to take and how did he connect something to his sockets in the first place?
I'm not sure what kind of record I could break to be in the Guinness World book of records or if I would even want to. Reading about all these people is funny and entertaining so I guess I will leave it to someone else to break the records. It amazes me the crazy things people come up with for their minute of fame.

Black Friday Shopping at a glance
According to Yahoo News "Black Friday" is the Friday after Thanksgiving and is often considered the traditional start of the holiday shopping season in the U.S.
According to the article "Black Friday" is not the busiest shopping day of the year it is actually the Saturday before Christmas which I found interesting. Maybe so many people assume that there will be more people out on Black Friday that they have decided to stay home instead of fighting with the crowds.
I love shopping and unfortunately this year I had to work the day after Thanksgiving so I chose not to get up at 2:00am before I went to work. Last year was a different story and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. The crowds are massive but there is just something about being out that early in the cold that makes it more exciting than an ordinary day. Even though"Black Friday" is not the busiest day it is the highest grossing in sales day. Today, Saturday, will be my "Black Saturday"; I am armed with coupons and my debit card. Let the fun begin!
Some people may not enjoy the crowds and long lines so online shopping might be more of an option or starting earlier in the year to beat the craziness. Christmas is not all about "getting" it is about "giving" and celebrating the birth of our Lord and Saviour. Being generous to those in need who might not be as fortunate as you and I is the start of a joyous holiday season. Sometimes it is so easy to forget about that as it is easier to get wrapped up in our own worlds, believe me I know. Happy Holidays!

Thanksgiving rates as dangerous holiday for highway deaths
According to TheTrucker.com Thanksgiving is one of the most dangerous holidays , being the third most dangerous after New Year's Day and the 4th of July. Between 1998 and 2008 there was an average of 572 deaths annually on U.S highways during the Thanksgiving holiday, making it the most deadly four-day holiday period on American roads, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
I know that there are alot of travelers out on the road but I thought by people flying would cut down on some of the deaths on roadways.
After reading this article it opened my eyes to the fact that most of the deaths were young adults between the ages of 18-29. That really hits close to home for me being that I have four children between those ages. Another interesting fact is that 56% are men and 45% are women and shift workers are at risk as well. This information was provided by the National Sleep Foundation. Have you ever been so tired when driving that it was a fight to keep your eyes open? That is the worst feeling ever! I can remember being at a conference in Kansas City, MO and staying out a little too late the night before and having to be up for sessions the next morning. When we were released at noon I had to actually pull over in an area and take a nap. I felt a little uneasy since I was traveling alone but I reclined my seat covered my whole body, including my face, and took an hour power nap.
If you are traveling over this holiday season make sure and leave for your destination in plenty of time, watch your speed, (the posted speed limit is as fast as you are supposed to go), keep a safe following distance from the car/ truck in front of you and do not tailgate and if you are tired pull over and take a nap or have someone else drive and most important WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT. I hope that everyone has a blessed and safe Thanksgiving and does not become one of the statistics.

Its the Weekend!
Wow! What a fast week this has been. It seems like it was just Monday and then next thing I know it is Friday! Time flies so fast and it seems as if the days blur together, especially now since I am taking online classes each semester. Yesterday I had a chance to go shopping for a few hours to find a decoration for my home. I love to shop! All the Christmas items are out and it is hard to believe Christmas is just a few weeks away. But first things first, can you believe next week is Thanksgiving? Every year we celebrate with my husbands family and always have way too much to eat but isn't that what you are supposed to do?. Hmmmm what should I bring this year? I love to cook so it should not be too hard to find something in one of my many cookbooks. I so look forward to the lazy Thanksgiving afternoon. Being that Thanksgiving is not at my house so I don't feel like I have don't have to be up doing something constantly...what a relaxing day! Have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving and don't forget about the things we ALL have to be thankful for everyday.

Eva Longoria Files for Divorce From Tony Parker
According to Fox news the Desperate Housewives' star Eva Longoria filed for divorce from her NBA star husband Tony Parker Wednesday, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple had only been married for three years but spent alot of time away from each other during that time due to their jobs. The filing stated that they each had a prenuptial agreement.
Being that Desperate Housewives is one of my can't miss shows I really hated to hear this news. Divorce is so hard even for an average person let alone for two people that are famous and always in the media. From reading the article it seems as if their relationship was on the rocks from the very beginning with an accusation of an affair. The couple have no children together.
According to the article the couple declined to to comment to Fox411.com but the former couple each posted a statement on their Twitter accounts addressing the divorce. They said "We love each other deeply and pray for each other's happiness: the posting said. Okay, so you still love each other but don't want to be married? That just sounds crazy to me. If I love someone I would definitely find a way to work things out and fulfill my commitment to that person. It would be hard if your husband traveled alot, like Tony did, and have women throwing themselves at your feet. But Eva wasn't Miss innocent herself she had Mario Lopez as her "boyfriend" when Tony was away. I know that would not fly at our house but in all honesty I don't think that would ever happen.
Marriages are tough enough for ordinary people but add in being famous and having the temptations around you everyday. That would make it even harder to be faithful, for some people. I hope both Eva and Tony find their soul mate and live happily ever after with who ever that might be.

Driver sought in deadly California motorcycle pileup
According to Yahoo news a driver who slammed into a group of motorcycle riders, killing four of them and his companion, has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, and police are looking for another driver who may have triggered the crash.
It makes me sick when I hear of a horrific crash, such as this one, but it makes it 10 times worse that the driver who caused this was under the influence.
These motorcyclists were riding this past weekend to enjoy the beautiful weather and to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their club. According to the article there was a vehicle who was passing them on a two lane road forcing an oncoming car off the road and then it veered back on and into the group. This vehicle that was passing and attributed to this accident never stopped. From what the article says none of the motorcyclists go the license plate number of the other diver - and none pursued him, they chose to stay behind to help their friends. Boy, that would be a tough one. It seems as if they had enough people to stay behind and help with the injured I would have went and tried to get a license number of the other driver. The article also stated that it was unclear if the driver's alleged alcohol consumption contributed to the collision. Come on! If you can smell alcohol on someones breath then I'm sure they have had what is over the legal limit.
This group of people going out for an enjoyable day ended it in losing 5 people in their small group. Highway safety is a huge concern for all of you. Watch what you are doing out there on the road as it could have consequences and it could alter your and someones elses life forever. Accidents do happen but most are driver error and can be avoided. I hope they find that other person and hold him accountable for what he has done and I hope that the families of the victims find peace with what has happened.

No place like home
A week ago I had to make an unexpected trip to South Dakota. The flight was booked only a week before departure and was not a direct flight. I had always heard of people having a nightmare trip with delayed flights and I had been fortunate to not ever have that happen, until now.
My flight left Sunday at 2:30 pm so I got there about 12:30 to get checked in , go through security and have a few minutes to spare. At the time we were to be boarding the plane they announced it was running about 2 hours behind schedule. Not good! Finally we were able to board and everyone was worried they would miss there connecting flights. We arrived in Chicago at the time I was supposed to be boarding the plane to South Dakota. If you have ever been to the Chicago airport you know what a huge terminal it is! I took my chances and tried to make my flight, the air attendant said that it was about 18 minutes in a brisk walk to make it to the location I needed to be at. I took off in a fast walk/ run with my purse / laptop and my suitcase that I had carried on. By the time I had reached the terminal I was sweaty, out of breath and told I would have to book on the next flight later that evening. Geez. The next flight left at 8:40 that night. I ended up getting to Sioux Falls, SD only to find out I had to drive another hour and a half to S Sioux Falls, NE to get to my motel room. I got to the motel room about 12:30 am.
On Monday my appointment was at 9:00am and I was done by 1:00 pm, I drove back an hour and a half to the terminal. This time the flight leaves on time, thank goodness. Our plane gets to Denver Colorado and guess what........ the flight has been delayed by 2 hours. This is crazy! I finally get back to Springfield, MO at 11:30 pm, drive to Webb City. What a trip!
I was so excited to be home, even though I had only been gone a day and a half it felt like a week. My sweet husband left the lamp on for me in the bedroom and on my nightstand was a beautiful bouquet of flowers he had there waiting to welcome me home. All the frustrations that I experienced had were wiped away in an instant. I love to go places but there is definitely no place like home.

10 most overpriced products you should avoid
According to Wallet Pop there are overpriced products that you should avoid. Who wouldn't want to save time and money? Often, however, one comes at the expense of the other. The ten products are as follows: Text messages, bottled water, movie theatre popcorn, brand name drugs, hotel mini bar, coffee, wine, greeting cards, hotel in room movies and pre-cut fruits and vegetables.
In reading this article I was surprised that I was only guilty of three indulgence's. I feel like I am a thrifty person and I am always looking for ways to save money. The items listed make total sense but sometimes you have to splurge.
I am not a big texter but my daughter is so I do have unlimited on her plan. The article says that six hundred text messages contain less data than a one minute phone call. Huh? I don't know if I believe that. Bottled water is another big one. Why do people buy bottled water when they can get filtered water out of the tap? I guess that goes back to the convenience. Okay, I don't know about you but I can not go to a movie without buying the yummy, calorie filled popcorn. That is just one luxury I will not give up. Fortunately I am not on any prescribed drugs so no name or name brand doesn't mean much to me. A hotel mini bar has 400% markup. Apparently I have not stayed in a hotel nice enough to have one but no way would I pay those prices. Coffee and wine are also overpriced, depending on where you purchase. It is so funny that greeting cards are listed. I have always thought the same thing and I have been known not to give a card or go to Factory Card Outlet and buy the .50 ones. Cards are definitely a waste of money in my book. Now if it is a gift card that is totally different. Also, hotel in room movies. I'm not sure how much the movies are but anytime I have ever been in a motel there is no time for that or the front desk has free ones for you to watch. The last one was pre-cut fruits and vegetables. Personally don't like the taste of pre cut fruit but vegetables are ok. Sometimes it is just easier to but premade items if you are busy.
This article had a lot of things to think about next time you are faced with price or convenience. I think everyone should spurge once in a while if you can afford it. I know paying $5.00 for popcorn at the movies is expensive but I don't go to the movies very often so I can justify that when I do go. Saving time is sometimes more important than saving money. Everyone has priorities, a budget and the luxuries they enjoy. As for me I don't think this article changed my way of thinking but it is a good eye opener for money I could be saving.

Crippled cruise ship expected in San Deigo Thursday
According to CNN A crippled cruise ship stranded off the coast of Mexico with nearly 4,500 people on board is now expected to arrive in San Diego, California, around midday Thursday, Carnival Cruise Lines said in a statement. The ship had departed Sunday from Long Beach, California.
What a nightmare! I feel so bad for the passengers and crew members on board. The worst part is they have no air conditioning, hot food or telephones. Some vacation. But at least they are receiving a full refund and reimbursement for transportation costs and a complimentary free cruise. Can you imagine the stress level on that ship?
Having been on a cruise, I know how I looked forward to relaxing and enjoying my adventurous trip. But this particular cruise instead of seeing beautiful islands you are stuck on a ship with no necessities and eating SPAM instead of fine cuisine. Apparently the fire started in the engine room. Can you imagine? How scary to be stuck in the middle of the ocean with no power or anything and a fire? Thank goodness three tugboats have joined in the effort to tow the ship to land. Some people say they will NEVER take a cruise again especially with Carnival. I'm sure it will come out how the fire started and if it could have been prevented. Unexpected things happen everyday and unfortunately it just so happened to these people on their vacation. What a wasted week. It sounds as if Carnival is doing the best they can to keep everyone comfortable and compensating them for a future cruise.
As for me, I would not let this stop me from taking another cruise again. No one got hurt and you can not spend your life being mad and worrying about if something bad will happen. I believe that you have to live life to the fullest and take the hits as they come your way. Someday maybe the passengers can look back and laugh at this unfortunate situation and hopefully it can be on their next cruise. I hope everyone is rescued and makes it back home safely.

Bad Hair Day
Okay, I need to know from all of you out there, am I the only one that has hair drama? I have spent years, I am not kidding, looking for the perfect hairdresser. I have had bad experiences with the way my hair is cut and the colors that have been mixed for the so called perfect shade. I have taken in magazines and been very specific with what I want and what I do not want. For some reason they always want to make me blond or put in blond highlights that washes me out , I am so not a blond.
It is frustrating because, two girls previous to the one I am going to now, did an awesome job cutting my hair but the color would always turn out different than what I had expected. My husband even agreed with me that she had not done a good job and wanted me to go back and have her fix it. How can she not know that my hair looks hideous and I want to wear a hat for the next month? Good grief, my husband even said something! It is so awkward to quit going to a hairdresser because it never fails you see them out somewhere and feel like you have to avoid, almost like you are cheating on her or something.
I refuse to grow old gracefully when I am still in my 30's so I guess I will keep paying top dollar and hope that my hair comes out right one of these times. Maybe "doing hair" is more complicated that I think but we'll see after tomorrows appointment if I get the look I am going for. Wish me luck!

Arrest Warrants Issued for Randy and Evi Quaid After Couple Misses Hearing
According to ABC news Arrest warrants have been issued for Randy and Evi Quaid after the couple failed to show up at their Santa Barbara, California court hearing this morning. The warrant for Evi is effectively immediately, but Randy;s is being held until November 16 because he has another hearing to attend in Canada next week, according to Judge Donna Deck. Their failure to show up in court also means that the couple lost half of the $1 million bond they posted to guarantee their appearance.
This famous couple is unbelievable. Have they lost their mind? Do they think they are above the law and can not just show up at court and it will all go away?
Back in September I first blogged about the Quaid's and thought it would be interesting as the story to follow. Okay, first of all it is bad enough to have broke the law and to have to post a bond. But then not to show up and lose $500,000 when they had lost the majority of their money before that? I don't know about you but that just does not make sense. The Quaids have now said the fled to Canada out of fear that they will be hunted down and killed by a group Randy calls "star whackers". Are these people out of their mind? They are obviously delusional..
As I said before I think it so sad that the Quaids are running away from their problems instead of dealing with them. I found out a long time ago that only makes things worse. Hopefully one of the days they will come to their senses and deal with the issues at hand. I hope they get the help they need, for some reason I feel it might be more mental than anything else.

Baby, Mom Killed When Dad Truck Plows Into House
According to Fox News A father slammed his pickup truck into a bedroom where his newborn daughter and her teen mother slept, killing both before witnesses rushed to help them from furniture and debris, police said.
What a tragedy that a young man would take the life of his 10 day old daughter and her mother. What custody battle could be so bad that you would kill?
I really don't know why I torture myself by reading these types of stories. What is wrong with people to go so far off the deep end and commit murder? This 22 year old young adult intentionally crashed into the house, there were no skid marks. According to the article two teenage witnesses walking home from a Halloween party said they ran to help after seeing the Cadillac Escalade speed down the street the open up an 8 foot hole in the wall of the residence last night. Believe it or not the teens other child, which is three years old, was in the room but he was unharmed. That poor little boy lost his mommy and his baby sister. The young mother was described as happy and had just graduated high school and planned to go to college.
Choices that you make can effect you for the rest of your life. This young lady made a very bad choice by choosing to have a baby with this unstable young man. The ending of this did not have a favorable outcome and the little boy left behind will never truly know his immediate family. How sad is that.....This couple had dated for about a year and half. I just don't understand how someone could so something so horrific.

Workplace safety rules a part of ND death probe
According to Yahoo news, state regulators are investigating whether The University of Notre Dame violated safety rules when it allowed a student to vidoetape football practice from a tall hydraulic lift that toppled in high winds, killing the young man.
These types are things that I have bad dreams about. Why in the world would this young man risk his life just to videotape this football practice and where was safety / risk management to stop it?
Being a little scared of heights I would NEVER get in a lift especially if the wind was blowing in gusts of 51 miles per hour, I call that common sense. I have also learned that working in the trucking industry that not everyone has it and that is demonstrated by the young man who lost his life. I know that there are certain regulations to follow and it sounds as if someone dropped the ball by not doing proper training and monitoring. Notre Dame has not said alot about the death due to an ongoing investigation. What a way to die and how preventable this was. What about all the football players and coaches, did they not know it was dangerous for him to be up there?
This young mans life could have been spared only if he had the proper training. It is so sad that he died in this horrific way. This makes me want to scream "Use your head people" If it is not safe, don't do it. Hopefully students and employees of the University will take safety more seriously to prevent this type of thing from happening again.

Washington referees may face ban for charity pink whistles
According to KING 5 news a group of football officials in Washington were trying to support breast cancer research while working this week's games, so they made a pledge to donate all game checks to the Susan G Komen Foundation. Then, to top off the charitable gesture, they announced they would all use pink whistles during the games. Now, there's a chance those whistles could cost the refs a chance to work state playoff games and a fine accessed.
Okay, I am all for following the rules but couldn't the referees be warned instead of missing a playoff game and fined? Come on, these guys were doing a selfless act and the punishment I think is very harsh.
Being that my husband referees volleyball and basketball I really took this attack personally. These men and women take abuse from the crowds and really work hard out on the court. In the article it stated that "It sends the wrong message to the kids that are playing the game. If they broke the rules why can't I do the same." Okay, first of all how is being charitable sending the wrong message and how many people actually know the "rules"? It is so unfair that these refs would be losing an equivalent to three checks that they would have normally earned by doing the games? Do you really think they are going to be charitable in the future? I think they should be reprimanded but not have any money taken away from them. Isn't that going back on the contract that they had with them? Do they not have to be paid for services rendered?
Shame on the WOA: what was supposed to be a supportive, charitable gesture that was intended to help in the research and cure of cancer has turned to a disciplinary situation. I hope these referees don't let this event deter them from being charitable in the future.

Viva Las Vegas
For my daughter's 21st birthday we took the family to Las Vegas to celebrate this past weekend. The "kids" had never been before so we thought this would be a great way to do something a little different and make it memorable for everyone.
The trip started off with my husband waking up and running a fever. I medicated him up and prayed that his fever broke and stayed away while we were on the plane. At the airport we ran into the 3 of the Osmond Brothers , which was pretty cool. I made my daughter take a picture with them just because they are famous but she had never heard of them before and wished we had ran into Justin Timberlake instead.
After arriving in Las Vegas my husband was really sick so we dropped him off at the motel and decided to do a little sightseeing. Later that night he started feeling better so we went down to Freemont street to see the light shows, which was an awesome experience.
We rented a car but it is hard to drive and park at all the different properties so we ended up walking the strip. I'm not sure how many miles and steps we walked but we were all hurting by the end of the day, but it was worth it. We had a great time and plan on taking my son when he turns 21 so watch out Las Vegas....we'll be back.

Things don't always go as planned
A few weeks ago I wrote about my car getting backed into at church and causing damage to the front end. Well, I dropped my car off last week to have it repaired. The rental company put me in a 2010 Chevy HHR which was kind of cool, but it used alot more gas than my Hyuandi. After dropping my car off Monday the repair shop called me Thursday to let me know my car was ready to pick up. My husband went to pick up the car and said he saw something on my car but was going to let me look at it and see what I thought. Oh my goodness, I pick up my car and the bumper / fender assembly was not fitted together and is noticeably loose. There are three noticeable rough paint runs (one piece was still primered) and the pin striping is a different color than the untouched side. I went ahead and took my car and let the mechanic at work look at it and he told me to take it back and demand the fix it right. The car was taken back Monday and the body shop agreed this was not acceptable and wanted the car again so it could be fixed. I was nice even though I was so angry that they had sent my car out looking like a piece of junk. Not to mention the rental car had already been taken back. This time they say the repair will only take a day and I am borrowing my daughter's car. So we'll see...hopefully it will look like it did before the accident. I am trying to put a positive spin on a negative situtation.

Murder charges filed after off duty detective is killed
According to CNN first degree murder charges have been filed against a man who Baltimore, Maryland, police believe killed an off duty detective by striking him in the head during a dispute over a parking space.
When I heard about this story I could not believe that someone would become so angry to kill over a parking spot
Apparently the police officer was out celebrating his 38th birthday with a friend at restaurant. Sian James, 25, is suspected of the death of the off duty police officer. I know I have been at the mall, the holidays seem to be the worse, and have had someone take my parking spot but the thought never crossed my mind to kill someone over it. The alleged killer picked up a piece of concrete hitting him in the head, the victim later died at the hospital. Can you imagine going out for a fun night and having some jerk throw something at you and die from it? That is crazy.
If I was put in a situation that was confrontational I know that I would back down and let the situation diffuse. Come on, it was a parking so big deal, definitely not losing your life over. In no way do I blame the police officer but could he have just let this crazy person have to spot and find another one? It could have saved his life.

Bosses Day
Well, for those of you who don't know Saturday is bosses day. In fact I was reading something today and it said this whole week was bosses week. I really think that is taking it too far. What about an employees week or even a day for that matter? I'm sure most of you have one boss. At the company I work for we have four bosses. This means we have four people to keep happy on a daily basis and who don't always agree 100% of the time, this can create unique challenges. Anyways, being one of the most senior employees, not in age but tenure, I take it upon myself which I don't mind, to coordinate these types of events. The money dontations from the employees were a little slow coming in so I reminded them of how generous the bosses were by making sure we had our paychecks each week and allowing us to celebrate their birthdays at the companies expense. That must have worked because emails were flying and promises of money were being made. Eventhough our bosses can afford to buy whatever they want. Having someone think about you and take time out of their day to do something nice is priceless.

Woman turns addiction into ministry
According to the Joplin Globe Juliet (Hardee) Rose was born into an addiction from a heavily-drinking mother and a drug-addicted father. As a troubled 16 year old, she took off for Las Vegas and survived as a prostitute. The article goes on to say she was a "functioning addict", had three failed marriages and had her two children taken away. She hit her all time low when she was arrested for the ninth time on 11 felony charges. Since then she has turned her life around and has started a ministry where she can use what she has been thru help other people in the same situation.
When I read this story I was brought to tears. This woman, after everything she had been through, had the courage to pick herself back up and use her failures, as a witness to other people that were hurting in the same way. What a remarkable story.
This lady had been brought up in a home where drinking and drugs were acceptable and obviously had no stability. When she ran away to Las Vegas at the age of 16 that could have been the end of her. How scared and alone she must have felt. Having failed marriages and her kids taken away must have been so painful for her. It is ironic that her father, who had been an bad influence in earlier years, had turned his life around and came and posted her bail. For nothing short of a miracle, all charges were dropped and she kept good on her promise to GOD that she was going to serve him wherever she might be. What I think is awesome is that she began Guiding Light Ministries who helps women wanting to turn their lives back around. According to the article "They want to see these women learn to love themselves and, in the process, become responsible and reproductive members of the community" Rose has her sons back and is going to college and is setting a good example in so many ways.
This article reminds me of the first paper we wrote in this class. I do not know Rose but I am so proud of her accomplishments and I know that she will succeed in whatever she puts her mind to. I know I try to learn from my mistakes but the thing is you always have to keep pushing forward. We can ALL do whatever it is we want to succeed at. Maybe we screw it up the first time or it doesn't turn out exactly as we had anticipated but we can turn something bad into good. we can all learn from our past mistakes.

Police: Women targeted in party overdoses
According to CNN.com young women at a party, attended by college students, were the primary target of spiked drinks, authorities said. One of them was sexually assaulted and multiple overdoses were reported. Some of the victims said they had consumed only one or two beverages before becoming ill.
Being a parent of a 20, almost 21 year old daughter this really hits home to me. It wasn't that long ago I was going to parties and having fun but looking back now I know how dangerous it was and still is.
According to the article no one seems to know how the date rape drug, roofies, got into the vodka that only the girls were drinking. What a sick individual to put a drug in a drink in order to make the girl unconscious so he could do whatever he wanted to with her. What a violation! Being a woman I think this is one of the worst crimes that could happen to a female. Being forced to have sex and not even being awake to know what was going on or to cry for help. How disgusting, think of the venereal diseases you could get or becoming pregnant. According to the school "Students identified as being with the party will have a conduct hearing that could result in an intensive education course" Are you kidding me? A girl gets raped and there is no punishment besides being reeducated? That is ridiculous.
If you are going to a party, bring your own alcohol or drink beer or wine coolers that has not been opened and keep the drink with you. Do not set the drink down or that might give the creeper a chance to slip in a roofie. If you are the DD keep an eye of eveverything for the sake of your friends, you might notice something out of the ordinary and be able to save a sexual assault from happening. Better yet don't go to parties or drink that way you won't have to worry about it.

Abducted California 8 year-old was sexually assaulted
According to CNN the remarkable recovery of an 8 year-old-girl in Fresno, California --which combined solid police work with the efforts of good Samaritans -- turned bittersweet Tuesday when authorities said the victim had been sexually assaulted.
When I read this story I felt sad for this little girl that her innocence had been taken away but so happy that her life had been spared.
This story was absolutely incredible. This random person, who could have been you or I, recognized this pickup truck from the news and decided to follow this truck. The driver initially saw only a man in the truck but then a child stuck her head up. The man then pulled in front of this truck and cut the driver off and the girl opened the door and ran. What courage this man had to not only to be perspective and then to take matters into his own hands which ultimately save the girls life. According to the article the officer said "We beat the odds today, most often abduction victims aren't found until it is too late. Of those killed in an abduction, 74 percent are killed in the first three hours. I don't know about you but that is nothing short of a miracle that guy was in the right place at the right time. What a hero!
I don't know of a punishment that could fit this type of crime but i'm sure he will get his in prison. This sick individual needs help. I once heard from a police officer that a child predator is the worst kind, he is never fully rehabilitated. This girl and her family will never be the same but at least she is alive and can heal from what has happened in the past.

No laps for warm laptops; skin damage is possible
According to yahoo news you have ever worked with your laptop on your lap, it could lead to "toasted skin syndrome". This syndrome has been described by "an unusual-looking mottled skin condition caused by long-term heat exposure, according to medical reports
When I read this article I could not believe they had actual medical terminology for a burnt skin condition caused by laptops. How could anyone have burns from a lap top?
I'm not sure how many times I have worked with my lap top on my lap but it has been quite a few and I have never been burnt. According to the article these people it had affected, had the laptop on their laps for an extended amount of time. The temperatures can reach up to 125 degrees. Wow, that is hot! I would think that after a while it would become uncomfortable. Now computer companies are placing warnings in user manuals that placing lap tops on laps or exposed skin for extened periods of time because of the risk for burns. Ha! Okay, if something is that hot and is buring my skin why would I not have enough common sense to remove whatever is causing the discomfortmant? This reminds me of the McDonalds warning on coffee that it might be hot and to use caution. You think?
Since I use the edge of my couch for a lap top desk or a table, depending on where I am at this really doesn't really concern me. If I did have the lap top on my lap I would move it before it leaves discoloring burns on my skin. Ouch! This just goes to show that some people do not have any common sense about a problem that should be easy to solve. Okay people, this is your warning do not leave you lap top on your lap for extended amount or it can cause burns to your skin. Crazy!!

Motorcycle Accident
Well this Sunday did not turn out to be any better than the last. Last Sunday my
car was backed into in the church parking lot. This Sunday I opened an email from an old friend telling me that a mutual friend of our had died Friday. Apparently he and his girl friend had been riding his Harley and he lost control. I don't know all of the details but it physically made me ill. I had flashbacks of the motorcycle accident my husband and I had. This past Labor Day weekend we took a trip to Eureka Spings with two other couples for a day of shopping and just enjoying the beautiful day. Right as we got to Eureka my husband lost control of the bike and I was thrown head first over the front of the bike and my husband jumped to the left and the bike wrapped around the tree. I remember hitting my head on a rock and just rolling and grasping at anything I could, I thought I was going to the bottom of the revine. That was the absolute scariest thing I have ever been through in my life. I am so thankful for our helmet's which I know saved our lives. Our bodies were bruised and covered in roadrash but we were OK. My friend Ty had just turned 40 a few months back and he was a very lively guy to say the least.I'm not sure if he was wearing his helmet but Please, please wear your helmet if you ride a bike, it could really save your life, it did mine.

Questions on Ex-Housekeeper Emerge for a Candidate
According to the New York Times Meg Whitman, the Republican candidate for governor of California had employed an illegal immigrant as a housekeeper for nine years. The mexican housekeeper, Nicandra Diaz Santillan told her in June of 2009, six months after her campaign again.
When I first read this article I thought how can you not know that someone is not a legal citizen. The Social Security Administration had sent a letter back to Mrs. Whitman stating there was a discrepancy. Did she chose to ignore it or did she ever get the letter?
What peaked my interest in this article was that I saw the interview today on one of morning shows. Mrs. Whitman claims not to have know for the past 9 years she was employing an illegal immigrant. She blames the findings on campaign smearing. It seems that Ms. Diaz-Santillan had a social security card but in 2003 a letter was sent from SSA stating that Mrs. Whitman "might want to check this out" Referring to a half filled out I-9. I think Mrs. Whitman chose to ignore this issue. Maybe she had hired her at a discounted rate or she like having someone that would do everything she asked. How can this political runner expect the people to follow the rules when she can't herself? I think she doesn't have a chance in the election, but we'll see. I feel bad for the housekeeper. Will she be deported or punished due to misrepresentation?
Working in the transportation I know how important it is to have legal, compliant employees that work for you. Not only is it a moral obligation but it is also the law. If these types of people are in charge of a whole state how can you expect them to do the "right" thing? You can't. I know I don't live in California but if I did my vote would not go to her. People that think they are above the law are in for a rude awakening....someday.

In Case of Emergency, Please Remove Your Bra
According to Fox News if you are caught in a disaster you'd better hope you are wearing the Emergency Bra. The Bra is used as a respiratory device in the event of an emergency.
Okay, any heading as the one above is sure enough to catch the attention of both males and females. I'm curious as to what this Emergency Bra is made of. This bra makes perfect sense.
According to the article"The goal of any emergency respiratory device is to achieve tight fixation and full coverage" The bra is already shaped like a face mask and when covering you mouth it minimizes contaminated air flow. Can you imagine the looks you would get taking off your bra and putting it over you mouth and nose? It might get a few raised eyebrows and unwanted attention. Dr Elena Bodner says that you have to be prepared all the time, at any place, at any moment and practically every woman wears a bra. Guys don't feel left out she is also working on a counterpart device for men but the shape has yet to be revealed.
This is a great idea to be protect yourself against dust, germs or chemicals. The cost for the Emergency Bra is affordable at $29.95 and it could save you life. Maybe this could be a material they could out in all bras to make them serve as a dual purpose. So, if you happen to see someone with a bra strapped around their face you'll know why. One cup for you and one for a friend.

Indiana kids died after 10 hours in closet
According to msnbc.comhttp://www.aolnews.com/nation/article/police-indiana-kids-died-after-10-hours-in-closet-mom-edyan-farah-charged/19643658 Edyan Farah, 28, was charged with two preliminary counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in a death. She remained jailed Tuesday on a $200,000 bond and was scheduled to be formally charged Wednesday. This lady locked three of her children in the closet so she could go visit a neighbor, then found the boy and girl dead when she returned 10 hours later authorities said.
First of all what kind of mother would lock her children in a closet for any amount of time? What caused the deaths? What was going through the children's mind? Why did no one hear the children and help?
Edyan told officers that she "was not in her right mind" which is an understatement considering she locked her own children in a closet and left them there to die. What gets me is that the neighbors had noticed the children appeared unusually thin but no one said a word. The report states that a family friend noticed that Edyan had been acting strangely and would not allow anyone into the apartment. Can you imagine being that Uncle and opening the door and seeing a dead child? How horrifying for all involved.Edyan's husband had left two weeks prior to visit his parents in Somalia and when he returns his wife will be in jail and his living children in foster care.
The deaths of the children were unnecessary. I don't understand why no one called Department of Family Services to make sure the needs of the children were being taken care of. It seems like lots of people came in contact but no one said a word. How sad for the deceased children and how sad for the ones that lived. I can't imagine going through such a horrific ordeal. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Word Play
Yesterday a co-worker asked if I wanted to play wordplay on our IPhones together. I'm thinking great i'm already addicted to playing Bejeweled but why not it sounds like fun. I downloaded the app with the help of my daughter. When I got to work this morning my friend asked me what my username was so that he could invite me to a game. We played a few games, while on lunch of course, and he didn't realize that I was really going to be some competition. Our scores were close, then he got ahead , then I scored a word worth 48 which puts me in the lead. Not too bad for the first round. Game on!!!!!

Randy Quaid, wife found living in ther old house
According to Yahoo News in Santa Barbara, California - Actor Randy Quaiid and his wife are facing burglary charges in California after the owner of the couple's old house reported they had been living there without permission. The couple had been staying in the guest house illegally. Police arrested the couple on several different charges.
The home was purchased from the Quaid's back in 2007. Had they been living there all that time? How could you not know someone was living in you home even if it is your guest house?
Imagine how surprising it would be to find out the squatters that had been living in your home were the former owners? Not only the former owners but none other that Randy and Evi Quaid. I am curious if this was a 2nd home for the new owners or if it is the main home that they live in daily? I find it hard to believe you would not know someone was living in your home. Surely they, the Quaid's, would have a car that would be visible and lights would be on at the property. How sad for the Quaid's to have hit rock bottom. Could they not let go of the former life that they had? The Quaid's have probably made more money than any of us will ever see in a lifetime.
It is so sad to see anyone suffer and struggle. In reality that could be any one of us. Hopefully they will be able to pick themselves back up, life within their means and get back to work. Good luck and well wishes to the Quaid's.

Gunman kills himself, mother at Johns Hopkins
According to Yahoo News earlier today a man who came distraught as he was being briefed on his mother's condition by a surgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital pulled a gun and shot the doctor , then killed his mother and himself in her room at the world famous medical center police said.
What kind of son would try to kill the person who was treating their sick mother? Then kill his mother and himself? I can understand being upset about a medical diagnosis but to kill another person?
More and more people are carrying guns for their protection and have a right to. But, I can't help but wonder if Mr. Pardus had been thinking of doing this for a while. Why would be bring a gun to the hospital? According to the article the facility does have metal detectors but with 80 entrances and 80,000 visitors a week, it is not realistic to have them everywhere. The mother had been in the hospital for 6 months and her son had been her only caretaker. How sad that the woman who gave birth to you, would die at the hands of her own child who says he loves her?
This situation was very unfortunate especially for the doctor, hospital and everyone involved. How terrifying to have a crazy gunman in you place of business. Mr Padus will spend the rest of his life in hell for what he has done and his poor mother will never know if her ilness could have been cured. Death is a natural part of life, too bad Mr. Pardus had to committ a murder for the easy way out.

Washington state woman made up acid attack story
According to CNN a 28 year old woman who said and unknown assailant threw a cup of caustic liquid in her face has admitted her injuries were self-inflicted, Vancouver, Washington, police said Thursday.
Okay, why would anyone throw acid in their own face, causing injuries that will last for the rest of her life? All the time and money spent looking for this so called African-American woman that supposedly did this to her? What a liar!
I remember hearing about this lady a few weeks and I felt so bad for her. Not only will she have external scarring, it would have to have an impact on her mentally as well. How could you look at yourself everyday knowing that you did this to yourself? Here is another case of the community pulling together to find the person who did this to Ms. Storro and collecting money for her medical expenses. Is this a cry for help or a way to get attention or both? As her family stated she was in a fragile mental state. Hopfully now she can get the help she needs. The authorities are still deciding if she will be charged and have not said what the motive was.
As far as her being charged with a crime. I think she should have to pay back the donations that she accepted but this is more of a mental issue. If anyone comes up to you and says"Hey pretty girl, do you want to drink this?" take off running the other way.

Student - Loan Debt Surpasses Credit Cards
According to The Wall Street Journal consumers now owe more on their student loans than their credit cards.
This does not surprise me. The American way to to get what you want now and worry about paying for it later. Students loans are cheaper than putting the tuition on a credit card but both ways have pros and cons.
Being a non-traditional student and making the decision to return to school was a big step for me. Money was a huge factor and I made the decision early on if I would only take as many classes as I could to afford to pay for out of my budget. At my age I did not want to accrue any more debt and charging it on a credit card was out of the question. If you are lucky enough to have grants and parents absorbing the cost you are so lucky. But for those of you who are paying your own way be careful and don't get too far in debt .
I know if you are like me you are in school to further or start your career. I don't want to see anyone become a statistic that could affect us for years to come. If you do take out student loan don't take out more than you need and start paying them back as soon as you can. If you have to charge on a credit card try to pay the balance monthly. I want to see all of us succeed and not be buried n debt.

Truck-related traffic fatalities drop 20%, lowest level in recorded DOT history
The Department of Transportation reports the number of truck-involved traffic fatalities declined 20% in 2009. The reduction is the lowest level recorded in history. In addition to the 20% reduction in crash fatalities involving large trucks, the number of truck occupants deaths decreased 26% in 2009.
Being in the trucking industry, in Compliance and Safety for the past 12 years, this is very exiciting for me.That is 865 lives! It is common goal in the trucking industy to put safe drivers behind the wheel of the big trucks you see going down the highway everyday and we are doing it!
Regualtions have changed over the years, even since I started in the trucking industry. There are several factors that contribute to the declining numbers of fatalities and injuries involving large trucks. One is increased seatbelt usage. I know alot of people have excuses as why not to wear their seatbelts but it is a law and it does save lives. Another good one is drivers are regulated on the number of hours he can drive/work in a day with a mandatory break called the hours of Service. What other profession do you know tells you how long you can work and how long you can sleep or be off duty? I know that the public sometimes sees truck drivers as a BIG nusiance but just remember without these people you would not have your coffee or diet pepsi you drink in the morning, the chair that you sit in the read your newspaper or the car that you drive. Next time you see a Big Rig going down the road smile or wave and you will most defintely make his or her day.
As the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Adminstration says "We will not rest until there are Zero commercial truck-related fatalities on our roads" is definetly a goal worth reaching for. One of the lives saved could be yours or a loved one. Drive safely and buckle up everyone I want to read all your interesting blog posts next week!

No retirement for these older folks, just work
According to CNN 68% of workers between 50 an 70 wanted to contine working in some capacity
When I read this article I thought that is so going to be me in about 25 years or so. I see that working is a priveledge and anything you can do to improve your life, I say go for it!
More and more older Americans are working past the so called retirement age. Whether it be to supplement their income or to keep themselves from getting too bored. I'm beginning to wonder if there will be any retirement by the time we are ready to retire, but I won't get into that subject.Personally I like to stay busy and always have several irons in the fire. Sure, I would like to maybe work only part time and have more time allotted for leisure activities but I will always be doing something if my health permits. Did you know that according to the U.S Census Bureau the number of centenarians, people who are at least 100, have more than quadrupled in the last 30 years? So I guess that means we will all be around longer than we thought.
Overall I think you should work as long as you can but enjoy life at the same time. I am so fortunate at this point in my life to have a job that I love and a 2nd job that I have created for myself that I can do well into retirement. Life is good and I am fortunate to be healthy and happy and plan on staying that way.

Va. woman devours 181 chicken wings in NY contest

According to Yahoo News a Virginia Woman ate 181 chicken wings in 12 minutes.
When I first read this article I am thinking who would want to eat that much food in such a short amount of time and why?
Sonya Thomas aka "The Black Widow" won the chicken wings eating contest this past weekend in NY, in Bufalo of course. When I think of someone in an eating contest I think of a big, sporty man who could hold alot of food but Thomas is female, 5'0 and weighs 105 pounds.Where does she put all the food? The professional eater (according to her website http://www.sonyatheblackwidow.com/) holds over 38 world records. It would be awesome to hold one world record but 38, that is incredible. That just goes to everyone has a talent and if you are having that much fun using it then why not? Personally, I can't eat more 10 hot wings in one sitting, and that is only if it is from Hackett's, anywhere else maybe 6.
Overall what a fun event to attend and to be a part of just for the experience. As for me, I don't think I will be entering any eating contest soon, but if I ever did I would fast for days and wear pants with an elastic waist.

The 5 Biggest Mistakes College Students Make
http://www.usnews.com/blogs/professors-guide/2010/09/01/the-5-biggest-mistakes-college-students-make.html
According to U.s News College Students make 5 big mistakes: Cutting classes, Overloading, Overmedia-ing, Procrastinating and Doing it alone.
Being that we are all college students,I thought this article had alot of truth to it and was just plain common sense.
Having all online classes makes it hard to cut class but if you procrastinate too much you might miss your deadlines and get a bad grade. Breaking the cost down per class really put it in perspective for me. I don't have student loans or grants so all the money I pay in I have had to work hard for and I definitely want to make the most of the funds I have put towards furthering my education. I can see where taking too many courses would be setting yourself up to fail. Personally I know my limitations and want to put forth my best effort and not overcommitt myself and end up getting less than desirable grades in my classes.
As a mother of a teenager and young adults I know how time consuming facebook and texting can be. I am guilty myself of checking facebook several times a day and making sure I keep my Bejeweled Queen status. Setting a "media-free" zone time everyday could be very beneficial.
Asking for help has never been an issue for me but I know from first hand experience not everyone feels comfortable admitting they don't understand or have a question. The person teaching the course wants you to succeed.and if you don't ask for help the professor has not indication you are struggling until it is sometimes too late.
All in all these are great tips to be used in college and in everyday life. These are constant struggles I think we all have, no matter what age, but it can be easily controlled with a little discipline and determination.

When animal rescuers become animal hoarders
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38978396/ns/health-pet_health/
According to MSNBC A registered Nurse in Pennsylvania took in over 7,000 cats in a 14 month period and kept them at her 29-acre property. Upon investigation of her property they found close to 150 dogs living in two mobile homes as well.According to John Welch, spokesman for the Riverside Department of animal services " There were inches-thick feces, urine stained walls, cages stacked high with starving animals, dead and rotting carcasses, trash, fleas; maggots and diseases".
When I read this article I could not help but be sickened.
This educated woman Linda Bruno ran a "shelter" with employees who aided her in the process. What person in their right mind would take in that many animals knowing they could not provide proper care. What gets me is that she only spent one day in jail, had to perform community service, pay fines and vow never to run another rescue again. Are you kidding me? This woman kills hundreds if not thousands of animals by lethal injection (which I agree is humane) but what about all the other animals that suffered for days, weeks and months on end? What about the other people who aided her in this torture? They get nothing?
While I am reading this story and writing this blog I have my two little dachshunds lying at my feet and think how their lives might be today if someone besides me had wanted to "rescue" them. As an animal lover I make frequent visits to the humane society (which usually brings me to tears while I am there) and to any pet store in the area. All these animals want and need is someone to take care of them and to love them. Ms. Bruno Karma is a bad thing and I am a true believer that what goes around comes around.

Court allows agents to secretly put GPS trackers on cars
http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/08/27/oregon.gps.surveillance/index.html
According to CNN, Law Enforcement will now be able to secretly put GPS trackers on cars.
When I read this article I could not help but think this is a really great idea. But on the other hand, it is also a violation of privacy that is kind of "creepy".
Having a GPS secretly installed on a vehicle to track illegal activity would be safer for Law Enforcement and lessen the risk of being noticed. As far as i'm concerned the suspect Mr. Pineda-Morena thought he was getting away with a crime but instead he had been outsmarted. Personally, if I was tracked by GPS Law Enforcement would be very disappointed. They might find that I have plants......... but they are defintely the legal kind.
Overall I think it is a great idea if they have reasonable suspicion for usage of the GPS and not just randomly pick people to track for no reason. If it keeps out Law Enforcment safe and gives them more time to be on the streets I am all for it. Now if they come up with a device to track moving violations, thats another story, and we might all be in trouble.
